Day 5

I had a horrible night last night.  I felt fine before I went to bed, but then I took one final dose of paracetamol and it was like that pushed me over the edge into feeling sick.

Not eating solid food and taking so much medication has given me an upset stomach, and just gives me a constant tummy ache and a nauseous feeling.  I've now replaced the medication that the hospital gave me which is a pain killer and an anti-inflammatory with just normal ibuprofen, because that medicine is known to give you a bad stomach, especially if you're underweight, and I am on the small side.

So I felt sick throughout the night and this morning, but then I took the ibuprofen instead of the other medicine, and watched the whole first series of The Inbetweeners and felt a lot better after!

I've found myself eating surprisingly solid things, because eating all this liquidy stuff makes me feel sick.  So far I've eaten things like jacket potato (obviously not the skin!), scrambled egg, soup, mashed potato, mushy peas, macaroni cheese (slightly pureed), jelly and ice cream... I'm worried that I'm eating things that are too solid, but my mouth opens quite wide when I take my bands off, and I don't feel like I'm straining myself so I think it's ok.  My mouth opens quite wide, the problem is I find it hard to shut my teeth together, but I'm not going to push myself to do it because the joint is still stiff and swollen.

Here are the Day 5 pics, I'm looking very bruised today but a bit less swollen.

  1. Hey Sarah, for some reason my blog wasn't following yours anymore and I missed so many of your updates!!
We're very close in healing and I can relate to so much of what you are feeling. I think we get really hard on ourselves about all the little details . I wish the healing was faster so we wouldnt have to wait for swelling and bruising to go down. I feel like my changes in my nose are very similar to the changes you have.
Hope you feel better every day. I'm at day 11 now and I feel a lot more normal (other than the face being numb and swollen)
I feel like I could probably drive safely now but my mom won't let me.
I'm jealous you've ate way more interesting food than me, I tried mashed potatoes but couldn't get it into my mouth :(

    1. Hi Terra, don't know if you've seen yet but I just commented on your blog too! Yes we're at quite similar points, it's nice to have someone so close in healing to reassure myself that everything's normal! I feel like I'm still quite swollen considering I'm on Day 5 now. Are you still banded shut? I find that when I take the bands off I can open wide enough to fit small amounts of food in.

  2. Hey Sarah. Just checking in and looking over the last few days of your recovery. You look exactly like I did at this stage, I've just had a trip down memory lane looking at all post op photos so far. I had a very similar bite/ profile to you and see that your post op profile is also very similar to mine at this stage! You are doing great, and will be so happy with the results as the swelling continues to decrease.
Ifs really good to stay off the paiin medals if you can. A lot of the time patients just routinely take them because they think they should, when most of the time they can do without. I was prescribed very strong pain medication, which really did help the first few days in hospital but when I got home I didn't end up needing to take them at all. I just took egular ibuprofen when pain was starting to increase. It's more important to keep applying ice packs/heat packs drinking regularly and eating as much as you can. Hope the next few days are easier.

    1. Hi Rhianna, thanks for your comment, it's nice to hear from someone who has been through it all and come out the other end successfully!

I've come off the pain meds a bit. I was taking liquid forms of paracetemol and diclofenic, but they made me so sick I've now just switched to regular paracetemol and ibuprofen and it's definitely helped. I'm not in too much pain at all to be honest. And now that I'm not feeling sick all the time I can start eating and drinking more!

  3. You look really good!
Get as much food down with meds as you can otherwise you get that icky feeling.

Did they give you something for nausea?

    1. Thank you! No they didn't give me anything for nausea, but since I switched from diclofenic to normal ibuprofen I've felt a lot better!
