Stop commenting on my braces drunk men!

I've noticed that the only people who feel comfortable bringing up the fact that I have braces without me saying so first are random drunk men.

I went out last night, and had one man start telling me about how his son has braces.  At the mention of the word 'braces', I think he could read my expression which said 'Thanks for bringing that up', and he was like 'Oh no, no, I'm just saying that you're going to have really nice teeth afterwards, and you're a pretty girl already so you'll look really nice'.  I'm sure he meant well, but it wasn't really what I wanted to chat about with a stranger.

Later that night a random drunk man in the street stopped me and said 'You look too old to have braces', so I said 'I am too old to have braces'.  He asked how old I was, and when I told him he was like 'So why do you have braces now?' and I just said 'It's a long story'.  He tried to get me to tell him the long story (which I didn't) and then asked for my number, so I suppose I should see the positive side that the braces didn't put him off!

It really depresses me when people like that do mention my braces.  I was not interested in either of them, but when I'm on a night out I at least want to try and feel attractive and forget that I have a big mouth full of metal like a teenager, and then I have people coming up to me and reminding me about that fact.  It also confirms that men obviously do notice them.  My friend always says to me that people don't even notice, and I know she's trying to make me feel better, but last night just confirms that they do.  I'm getting so sick of looking like a gummy, goofy metal-mouthed teenager.  I can't wait to get these stupid braces off.  I'm sick of feeling so unattractive all the time.

  1. Awwwwwwwwwww, I know exactly how you feel, its incredibly annoying... But realize braces and all this drama is so temporary in the grand scheme of things. When they come off you will know this is well worth it. When are you due for jaw surgery?...

    hugs!

  2. I know what you mean, Ive only had them on for 2 months and I cannot wait to get them off!! I was hoping I would be used to them by now but I still hate them, I dont even go out as much... Last saturday a couple of guys were chatting me and my friend up and when they realised we werent interested they starting saying: 'hey whats that in your teeth?" but in a very cruel kind of way and laughing at the same time: NOT COOL! Thank God one of my best friends was around, he told them I looked beautiful no matter what, I know he didnt really mean it but it made me feel better :)
Im so sick of this but I just have to keep thinking about the end result, which feels like is light years away :(
But like Jean-Jacques Rousseau said: Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.

  3. Thank you both for your comments, it's nice to know that other people understand how it feels! I know it will all be worth it in the end, but after over a year of wearing braces my patience is starting to wear thin! I liked the Rousseau quote though Hara! So true! Hopefully the fruit will be very sweet!

I can't believe how mean that man was to you Hara, but it's obvious he only turned nasty because you turned him down! People can be so mean/blunt, but hopefully the comments we'll get about our beautiful smiles when this is all over will counteract it all!

  5. aww sarah I think it sounds like they were just trying to think of a reason to talk to you and start a conversation!:) and also some guys actually think braces are cute so maybe they weren't automatically looking at yours negatively. I went out for my friends birthday the other night and I had just had my surgical hooks put on so I was feeling a bit self concious about them, and this random foreign guy went 'never take off your bracelets' to me, I was confused because I wasn't wearing any bracelets but then he went 'no the bracelets on your teeth they make you look cute!' haha! how niceeee:) and my braces look a lot worse than yours with all the little hooks all over them. Just try not to worry about them and be confident and if your not thinking about them neither will other people:D xx

  6. Haha, Hara you should have said back to him 'What's that in YOUR teeth?!' Thank you! I hope I do get my surgery date soon. I have an appointment next week so hopefully I will get some news then!

Hi Rosa, I think I'm quite a paranoid person anyway, and since getting braces I have such low self-confidence about my appearance that I just assume the worst!
